David O’Donnell went from number cruncher to gym owner after being inspired by Anytime Fitness at The National Franchise Exhibition.

After a decade in finance, David O’Donnell from Tooting, London, realised that he wanted a job that would benefit others as well as himself. Leaving his successful career in accountancy behind him, the 33 year old began looking for a new business opportunity.

David visited the exhibition, organised by Venture Marketing Group, and was immediately drawn to the official sponsors of the exhibition; Global Number One franchise, Anytime Fitness. The combination of working with a proven business model and the chance to play a part in promoting health and fitness within his local community was exactly what David wanted in a business.

He explains: “When I found Anytime Fitness, I was interested because it was a chance to provide something useful for a local community. Equally crucial was the sound business model in an industry that grew throughout the recession and is continuing to grow now.  You have a model which has been perfected many times and has been proven to work.”

Aside from his club reporting excellent profits and earning a glowing reputation in the local community, David identifies the great work/life balance as a benefit of running his own franchise. The fitness franchisee comments: “Being able to work when I want and meet a diverse set of people is great. I am able to get all the administrative jobs done from the comfort of my own home and then head down to the club in the afternoon. This model gives me the freedom to enjoy my time at the club and talk to members about the progress they’re making by coming to my club.”

Following the success of his Tooting branch, David has recently opened a second club in Ladbroke Grove – Anytime Fitness’ 100th UK club. He added: “Anytime Fitness has created a very equitable system of costs and processes. It’s great that it helps local people, but it’s attractive because it works financially. I am already aspiring to open my third branch in the next few years. Starting your own club is not for everyone and it’s not as hands-off as you might imagine, but if you follow the model and get it right then it’s very rewarding.”

Anytime Fitness will be exhibiting at The British Franchise Exhibition which will take place on 16 and 17 June 2017 at EventCity, Manchester..

Alongside fitness franchises, there will be excellent opportunities on offer within a variety of sectors, including food and drink, property, leisure and care. Visitors will be able to receive free impartial advice from industry experts and take advantage of over 40 educational seminars.
