Buying a franchise is an important decision. Both potential franchisee and franchisor should feel comfortable that the fit is right before proceeding. So we have the following recruitment process in place:

Jane Garrard -
After 20 years in recruitment, Jane Garrard made the transition into running a Personal Career Management franchise
Jane Garrard was a senior director in the recruitment industry responsible for the management of a large number of branches across London and the south-east. The part of Jane's job that she enjoyed most was the people development side, however this had become an increasingly smaller part of her role.
Also in the economic downturn, the vulnerability of the industry made her think about whether she really wanted to be doing this for the next 10 years and so began the quest for the perfect job.
Career management was an obvious area for her because it combined all the parts of her recruitment role that she enjoyed. After researching, Jane quickly came across Personal Career Management, which helps senior managers obtain their next role.
Unlike recruitment companies where its client is the employer, Personal Career Management supports the individual. It also provides services to companies that are making redundancies, helping employees get back into employment.
Jane wanted to work with Personal Career Management because of its focus on providing a high quality and professional service, and because of its excellent reputation. "I was really attracted to the idea of working with a company with such established expertise that has a genuine care and interest in its clients' success. When I realised I could buy a franchise it seemed an excellent chance to get where I wanted to be in the industry, using my skills with the brand name and credibility of Personal Career Management. Having done so well in the recruitment industry I really wanted to recreate that success in career management."
Personal Career Management is the only career coaching company that partners with the Telegraph, Guardian and monster.co.uk, three of the UK's top job websites and it has a high media profile, regularly appearing as career experts on the BBC, ITV and in the National Press.
Having bought her franchise, Jane is enjoying every minute. She says: "It's been an exhilarating time, learning how complex the work is but how rewarding it is for me and my clients. I am particularly glad I am doing something that has some meaning and really matters to other people.
What stage were you at when you wanted to do something different?
I was looking for a fundamental change in my working situation and pattern. I was looking to see if it was possible to combine my passion for helping individuals make the most of their skills and talents, with my desire to have more control of my business success and meet my objective of fundamentally changing my work life balance by working closer to my home.
What made you think of a move into Franchising?
Quite honestly I was naïve about the franchising industry and wasn't exploring franchising as a business model. I came across Personal Career Management's website and after a number of conversations identified that they were an organisation that I absolutely wanted to work alongside. I was delighted to then discover that as a franchisee, I could benefit from all of their expertise, track record and on-going support yet establish my own business with all the excitement, challenge and ownership that bought.
Why Personal Career Management?
From my very first conversation I was impressed with their professionalism, passion for and belief in what they do and most importantly the due diligence they went through to explore my suitability as a franchisee and extension to their brand. Their service and proposition was very compelling and I felt stood out in their sector giving me confidence in the future of the business. Their transparency and honesty throughout the process impressed and reassured me.
How you have found the support from Head Office i.e. training/launch?
Pre signing there is a lot of interaction including with other franchisees, to ensure that the decision is right for both parties and that you are clear on the benefits and restrictions of franchising. Pre-launch I had a lot of support both in terms of meetings to lay out and discuss plans, joint visits to potential offices and comprehensive operating manuals. Every step and process is detailed in the operating manuals from pre-opening to day to day business development and this is supplemented by your Franchise Manager's on-going and ready availability on the phone. I was also given a lot of practical and marketing support for my launch event. The ten day training course that came as part of the franchise was absolutely excellent and gave me both theoretical and practical experience. Now the business is up and running the support is there when I ask for it and we attend regular franchise meetings to get coaching and business support, and share ideas with colleagues.
Life as a franchisee, i.e. what you enjoy
Being responsible for everything from the financial planning and strategic business development to day to day work planning. Also the variety of business management, networking, marketing, prospective client meetings as well as actually delivering coaching programmes. It's hard work as it is all on your shoulders but at the end of the phone is your Franchise Manager, the other franchisees to ask questions and share best practise.
What would you say to others considering going into Franchising?
If you can find a business that you believe in and feel confident that you can deliver their service it is a fantastic way of owning your own business with the support of an established business model behind you.
