Spreading Joy and Combating Loneliness: The Heartwarming Story Behind “Present for a Pensioner”

Bringing joy to the lonely, CareYourWay’s “Present for a Pensioner” campaign delivers festive hampers, spreading kindness and connection across communities.

Changing Lives across the UK

In the true spirit of the festive season, CareYourWay once again touched hearts and transformed lives through its cherished “Present for a Pensioner” initiative. Running annually since 2016, this campaign has become a beacon of hope for those spending Christmas alone.

The 2024 initiative saw CareYourWay deliver thoughtfully curated Christmas hampers to more than 130 lonely and isolated individuals across the UK, including 35 in South Devon. Thanks to the generosity of local communities and businesses, these individuals were reminded they are valued and remembered during what can often be a difficult time of year.

Tackling Loneliness, One Hamper at a Time

Loneliness remains a silent epidemic, with nearly half of UK adults reporting feelings of isolation. For many, the festive season amplifies these emotions, leaving a sense of emptiness where joy should be. Research has revealed that chronic loneliness can have dire consequences, increasing the risk of early mortality by 26% and contributing to mental health struggles like depression.

Recognising this, CareYourWay launched “Present for a Pensioner” to spread cheer and make a meaningful impact. Since its inception, the initiative has delivered more than 320 hampers, each a small but powerful reminder that someone cares.

“Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year, for so many heartfelt reasons. We launched this initiative to transform Christmases through simple acts of kindness. Seeing how a small gesture can bring so much happiness is incredibly humbling.”
Jonathan Sabater Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer of CareYourWay

A Community Effort in 2024

The 2024 campaign brought communities across the nation together to fund over 130 hampers, each valued at £35. Donations from individuals, local businesses, and community groups made it possible to fill these hampers with luxury items and festive treats, offering more than material gifts – they delivered warmth, connection, and hope.

CareYourWay collaborated with healthcare professionals who nominated recipients, ensuring the hampers reached those who needed them most. This thoughtful and compassionate approach made a real difference to the lives it touched.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care in the South, praised the project: “The Christmas season can be a time of loneliness for vulnerable people. Reaching out to them with the annual ‘Present for a Pensioner’ project is something to applaud. It is lovely to see such a wonderful initiative, letting those people trying to live an independent life know that they are not alone.”

A Legacy of Kindness

The impact of the 2024 “Present for a Pensioner” campaign extended well beyond the holiday season. It fostered a sense of belonging and community, reminding everyone involved of the profound difference small acts of kindness can make.

As the initiative continues to grow, CareYourWay remains committed to combating loneliness and bringing people together. “We are extraordinarily proud to have expanded this initiative across the country,” Sabater shared. “Thanks to the unwavering support of our Devon community, ‘Present for a Pensioner’ continues to change lives every year.”

Looking Ahead

While the 2024 campaign has concluded, its legacy carries forward, inspiring more acts of kindness in the years to come. CareYourWay welcomes ongoing support for future campaigns. Businesses and individuals can partner or donate to help bring joy to those in need.
