An introduction to the French franchise market

Insights from the French Franchise Federation and Franchise Expo Paris – watch the below webinar!

In a recent webinar hosted by Franchise Expo Paris and the French Franchise Federation, industry leaders outlined why France remains one of Europe’s most attractive franchise markets. More than just a neighbouring economy, France offers scale, structure and long-term stability for international brands. Here are some key taleaways for franchisors considering expansion.

1. A resilient and established market

Franchising in France continues to grow, despite wider economic pressures. In 2024, the country recorded over 2,000 franchise networks, a 3% increase year-on-year, generating €88 billion in turnover. The sector supports nearly one million direct and indirect jobs, underlining its economic importance. Over the past two decades, the number of franchise brands has more than tripled, with turnover increasing fourfold.

2. Strong sector diversity

Food remains the leading franchise sector, particularly fast food, both in turnover and number of outlets. Retail segments such as home and personal equipment also perform strongly, while automotive and personal services continue to expand their footprint. For international brands, this breadth signals opportunity across multiple industries and not just hospitality.

3. A structured and supportive ecosystem

France’s franchise market is underpinned by a well-defined legal and professional framework. Founded in 1971, the French Franchise Federation represents both franchisors and franchisees and oversees the country’s Code of Ethics. It promotes fair know-how transfer, transparency and balanced relationships. With nearly 190 franchisor members representing around 40% of franchise outlets nationwide, the Federation connects brands with legal experts and advisors, particularly around compliance with France’s disclosure law. For international entrants, this guidance is essential.

4. A gateway through Franchise Expo Paris

Franchise Expo Paris serves as a central meeting point for brands, investors and master franchise candidates. For international franchisors, it provides visibility, market insight and direct access to qualified partners — making it a practical first step when exploring French expansion.

Final thoughts

France combines market size with structure. With more than 2,000 networks, €88 billion in turnover and a long-established regulatory framework, it offers both opportunity and stability. For brands looking to expand into Europe, the French franchise market presents not just potential but a system designed to support sustainable growth.
