Redundancy was the best thing that happened to me….

Graham Rowan, former Distribution Operations Director for Prudential UK & Europe, feels that agreeing redundancy terms was the driver for a number of positive changes.  He is now a proud franchise partner of Select Franchising and successfully runs 9 franchises across Scotland.

Graham comments “Having enjoyed a career at Prudential (and Scottish Amicable) for over 20 years in various senior roles I decided not to apply for any of the roles on offer in the company restructure carried out in 2006.  I had been keen to run my own business for a few years and agreeing redundancy provided the ideal platform to start out on my own.

I think it is important for people to realise that they don’t need to be victims – it’s not always easy but they can take control.  By doing this, I shook off the negative perceptions normally associated with redundancy and viewed it as a golden opportunity to really think about what type of business we wanted to run – and my wife Lorraine and I then set out to achieve it.”

This led Graham and Lorraine to look at a wide range of business options.  They looked at many potential franchises and chose Select Franchising, a leading recruitment franchisor.

Graham continues “We liked the idea of being able to drive our own success and having the flexibility of running our own business.  Select Franchising appealed to us as they had the best developed scale franchise offering.  They offered a flexible and professional franchise opportunity and all the support we needed to start achieving results from day one.”

Select Franchising has three unique and established franchise brands: Select Appointments (office staff), Parkhouse Recruitment (industrial, technical and engineering staff) and Select Hospitality (hospitality staff).

Graham continues “We opened our first Select Appointments branch in Glasgow in December 2006.  Since then, we have built the business to 9 franchises over 3 locations by reinvesting in the business, concentrating on a quality service to our clients and sheer hard work and determination with our teams.”

Graham and Lorraine are excited about continuing to develop their businesses in 2009 ”We’ve come a long way in a short time.  Things are never certain, especially in the early life of a business and we have a long way to go, but we’ve made a great start and redundancy feels like a distant memory already.”
