Get enterprising

The government has announced the location of 11 new enterprise zones to boost local growth and create more than 30,000 jobs by 2015.

The zones will be in some of the largest cities, including Manchester, Birmingham, Merseyside and Newcastle, as well as inviting applications for 10 more in other areas. Businesses will benefit from cheaper business rates, superfast broadband and lower levels of planning control.

The British Chambers of Commerce has welcomed this change. Dr Adam Marshall, Director of Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "This generation of Enterprise Zones has learned important lessons from the past, and has the potential to boost local private sector growth. We believe that simplified planning rules, better broadband and carefully targeted tax breaks can help attract and generate new business investment that is sustainable over time."
