April fools’ spoof viral campaign to publicise the launch of ChipsAway’s permanent spray tan range.

Objectives:  To grow brand awareness and promote interest in the brand.

Strategy:

The campaign started with the production of a simple low cost film - designed to look like a company briefing, which was to be hosted on YouTube and launched on social network sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest, as well as health and beauty blogs.   

ChipsAway’s Marketing and PR team also identified relevant contacts, publications and websites which could help the film go viral on Sunday 1st April (April Fools’ Day). ChipsAway staff and network of franchisees were also encouraged to forward the film to their contacts.

The video was ‘leaked’ (on purpose) by one of ChipsAway’s franchisees via his Facebook account late on Saturday 31st March. This was followed up with a response posted by ChipsAway on 1st April on the official website, Facebook and Twitter accounts linking to the YouTube film.

The viral campaign was headed up by ChipsAway’s marketing team who were responsible for posting on relevant beauty, automotive and local blogs and websites. However the success of the campaign was certainly helped along by ChipsAway’s network of franchisees spreading the buzz through various viral channels.

Evaluation:

As the objective was to promote interest in the brand, monitoring YouTube views and ChipsAway website hits were key to assessing the impact of the campaign. Press and social media monitoring is also being used to evaluate the reach of the campaign.

Results:

Receiving over 4,000 views in the first week, not only did this raise interest in the brand, but lead figures actually showed how the interest converted to money with ChipsAway reporting their busiest day ever - doubling the average number of leads sent to the network and achieving record visits to the website.

Ian Whitlock is motoring ahead ChipsAway

Former financial services executive Ian Whitlock is motoring ahead with his ChipsAway business.

In just less than two years he has expanded from his initial single van mobile operation to a ChipsAway CarCare Centre, a fixed base workshop. He is also now looking at taking on an employee to help him cope with a growing demand for his services and expand his business further.

He said: “I’m reaching a stage where the majority of my work is coming from referrals, which is a great accolade and something I’m really proud of.”


After his previous experience in the financial services sector, where he experienced the misfortune of being made redundant twice, Mr Whitlock, 55, says that by deciding to work for himself and taking on a franchise with a leading specialist in minor automotive paintwork repairs, he has finally hit lucky.
