The Daily Mail and Franchising: A Real Success Story

The Daily Mail has been a proud supporter of franchising for many years now. The close links we have with the British Franchising Association and the feedback we get from our many regular advertisers confirm our belief that franchising is a strong and vibrant marketplace, despite what is a tough economic climate.

Here at the Daily Mail our aim is to bring the concept of franchising to a new and much wider audience. Our readers range from people who knew nothing about franchising until they had their interest sparked by seeing the advertising in Monday's Daily Mail, right through to people who have their finances worked out and are ready to take the plunge.

Of course the Daily Mail also reaches a large number of readers with a proven track record in franchising. In fact the 2005 Natwest/BFA Franchise Survey states that the Daily Mail is read by more Franchisors than any other quality national daily newspaper, which really puts our standing within this business sector into perspective. If you are looking to recruit new franchisees it is of paramount importance to target the correct audience. This is where the Daily Mail can help you. Not only do we have a vast readership of nearly 6 million* readers every day, but the Daily Mail is also read by more Business People, Managers and those with previous experience of self-employment than any other national daily paper. In other words those people possessing the characteristics that you, the recruiter, would be looking for.

But it is not all just about advertising. With the Daily Mail's regular franchise editorial, written by Linda Whitney a financial journalist of many years standing, we provide unbiased, important and above all useful information for our readers; your franchisees of the future. Tackling topics from securing finance and the aspects, to individual case studies and advice on what to expect at exhibitions, the articles aim to educate the public about franchising as an exciting business option.

How to get your franchise in the press

Linda Whitney, who writes the Daily Mail’s weekly franchise column, gives tips on how get your franchise mentioned in the paper.

1. Find out when I am going to write about your franchise sector and send me your press release one week before the feature is due to appear. Get a list of feature dates from Kathryn Walton on 0161 836 5028:

2. Whenever you send any news always include:

  • A brief description of what franchisees do, including whether it is a solely management franchise, or a hands-on franchise, or a bit of both
  • Any previous experience or qualifications required or desirable
  • How many franchisees you seek in the next year
  • The amount of investment required. It can be the total amount, or the minimum personal investment required assuming the franchisee borrows the rest. All figures should include VAT (I know VAT can be reclaimed but putting in ‘+VAT’ uses up scarce word space).
  • Whether you are a member of the BFA or not
  • The telephone number potential franchisees should call.
  • Please do not send photographs unless requested.

Sending me information is no guarantee that it will appear but it certainly increases the chances. You can email Linda Whitney at ldwhit@globalnet.co.uk
